Break-through at the Coppinger house!
Our 4-year old foster son came to us 7ish weeks ago liking about 4 foods. (To be fair, he liked more than 4 but I'm not counting the chips and poptarts he frequently requested.) We took food changes slowly as we recognized that the poor dear had had too many changes in his life already.
Hotdogs every day? Sure. Whatever kept him feeling safe and comfortable.
GUESS HOW FAR WE'VE COME??
This kiddo has been so brave (in about 1000 ways). He is now willing to try new foods as long as he knows there's no pressure or disappointment from us if he decides he still doesn't like it.
I'm so proud of him.
I told you a while back that we started adding goodies like avocado, greens, and a variety of fruit to make smoothies for him. If we call it a smoothie? "I don't like that." If we call it a milkshake? "Can I have more?!"
Obviously, we now make a lot of
"milkshakes."
So guess what happened this week? Our family was eating Taco Salad for lunch and I thought that maybe, just maybe I could get him to try it. I tore the lettuce into tiny pieces. I crunched up a few extra
tortilla chips (because if chips could chase down the lettuce, we could have a winner!). I tossed in extra cheese. I stirred it all together like a casserole in his bowl and put more cheese on top. I made sure the cheese and chip were at the top of his first spoonful, asked him to try a bite and (drum roll please)...
The kid had FOURTHS!!!
It goes without saying that we're now adding bits of lettuce (from our garden, even better!) to anything we can now.
My point:
- Shucks, I'm just excited and wanted to share. I GOT THE LITTLE GUY TO EAT
SALAD!!!
- Don't give up on your picky kids! Try new ways to serve it, call it something fun. Keep trying!
