We have
definitely arrived at the "we like girls" stage of life at our house. Actually, we've been here for quite a while, seeing as our oldest son is 19. And, because our other boys are 17, 15, and 12, you can imagine that there are a lot of pretty eyes that swing our way when our family walks into a room. Our boys are sometimes oblivious and sometimes quite aware.
As for me, I am
congnizant of all of it, seeing as I used to be a girl when I was young. I can read teen girls' body language when they are around my boys and I am both mama bear and fluttery on behalf of my sons. So far, the boys have all been wise in their choices of "special friends."
With Valentine's Day coming up tomorrow, it's been fun to talk through each of their plans as
they navigate their relationships. Two of our boys are content to be "girl-less" right now (and the 12 year old shall be so content for quite some time). One of our high school sons is still too young to be serious with a girl, so he's making his cutie a card (and writing her a poem, be still my heart). Our college-age son has a girl attending a university in another state. They can't be together for Vday, but here's what he told me yesterday, "I actually surprised her
with flowers a couple weeks ago when she was so sad after she found out her aunt had cancer..."
I tell you what. If I'm her, I love that he sent flowers when they were needed instead of on the day he's "supposed to because our culture declared that Feb. 14 is a day we buy stuff for each other."
Ahhh, teenagers and relationships. It's both a delight and a gut-wrencher to be navigating this season with my sons. Sometimes I forget how to breathe. Then I remember that prayer is my source of oxygen.
After so many years together, 19 of them spent as parents, my husband and I value alone time together more than ever. That's what we'll be seeking tomorrow, you can be sure of
that.
I'm quite sure MELT Massages will be a part of our evening -
which is a Valentine Gift we gave each other a few years ago that keeps on giving and giving.
Dinner out is great, but then it's over. Flowers are beautiful, but then they die. Chocolates...well, there's nothing bad to say about chocolate, except for the sugar thing, and we won't go there this time. But MELT? We love spending money on that which will last. MELT is definitely something
that has been with us for years and will continue to be with us until death do us part. We highly recommend it. (Their Valentine's Day special only goes through tomorrow, so
now's the time!)
I'd love to hear what your Valentine's Day plans are! My goal is to start my family's day off with heart-shaped biscuits, which they will promptly tear apart and load down with gravy. Best Valentine's Day breakfast ever. :)
