Hi Fellow Heavenly Homemakers!
It's true. So many of us have enjoyed making our own
Vanilla Extract during the past few years because it is a great money saver, as well as a great way to keep our ingredients pure in our kitchen. But recently, the price of vanilla beans has gone way up - everywhere. Boo. :(
My vanilla bean supplier warned that this would happen because there was a vanilla bean crop failure Madagascar. So if you are reading my "How to Make Vanilla Extract" post, and you click over to buy vanilla beans, you will see that the prices are higher than last year at this time.
Is it even worth it?
I did the math based on new vanilla bean prices. I am so relieved to see that even with higher vanilla bean prices, it STILL saves money to make homemade
vanilla!!
My recommendation: Follow these instructions for making vanilla, but cut back on beans just a bit. I'd use 50 beans per one gallon of vodka - it'll still be great!
My other recommendation: Olive Nation always offers free shipping on vanilla beans (as long as you don't have anything else
in your cart) and right now they are offering a 20% discount on beans! That makes the price much easier to swallow, so I'd take advantage! (Discount expires 8-10-16)
Here's to saving money and eating fabulously!
