It works better for our family (and saves hundreds - thousands?? - of dollars) if
I pack food to eat when we go on outings. I counted and during the past three weeks, we've eaten
seven meals outside of our home - at the zoo, at a park, at Asa's workplace, and at several of Malachi's soccer games. What I've packed so far:
- Hotdogs
(twice)
- Hamburgers
- Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwiches
- Burritos
- Summer Sausage/Cheese/Crackers
- Rotisserie Chicken
Along with these main dishes I pack a big bag full of fruit (like grapes, apple slices, orange wedges, or applesauce squeezies), carrots with hummus, chips with guac, or whatever else we have on hand that will fill our bellies
and keep the kids happier during these outings.Â
Â
It's actually been very fun for all of us, and the kids get excited to see what I have in my bags each time. We have more games during the next two weeks, so I might have to get creative as I figure out what
meals we'll eat. Here's a great list of ideas. I'm thinking about making Sub Melts to take to tomorrow's game since I have everything on hand to make those.
Â
At minimum, I'm packing food for 9 (if Malachi grabs food from our stash right after his game), and Saturday I fed 13. The key is to have plenty of "side dish" options to help make sure everyone has plenty to eat and so that everyone can pick and choose what sounds good. There's a list here of fruits and veggies and other sides that pack well to take on the go.
